A minimum charge pays for the service call that exists even when washing takes only a few minutes. Base it on a realistic small job, then explain which work and travel area it covers.
Worked examples use illustrative USD inputs, not national averages or recommended market rates. Service prices exclude applicable sales tax.
The wash is only part of the visit
Travel, unloading, hose setup, cleanup and loading do not disappear on a tiny surface. Booking and payment administration use time as well. Separate time costs from vehicle costs, and include percentage processing in the selling-price calculation.
| Activity | Minutes |
|---|---|
| Booking and administration | 10 |
| Travel for this job | 30 |
| Unloading | 10 |
| Hose and equipment setup | 10 |
| Washing | 20 |
| Cleanup | 10 |
| Loading | 10 |
At an illustrative $36 hourly labor cost, 100 minutes costs $60. Add $10 chemicals, $12 vehicle cost, $8 equipment allocation and $30 overhead: complete cost is $120. The overhead allowance excludes the administration labor already counted above.
With 3% processing and a 30% margin, required revenue is $120 ÷ 0.67 = $179.11, rounded up to cents. This business could choose a simple $180 minimum for that scope. That whole-dollar policy is a business choice, not a national standard.
Define what the minimum buys
- A specific service and condition, not every kind of cleaning.
- A normal travel area and access assumptions.
- A limited scope that fits the time and resource estimate.
- Clear exclusions for additional treatment, restoration or extra surfaces.
A distant property or added treatment may require a new quote above the minimum. Do not use the minimum as a ceiling. If several tasks can be completed on the same visit, estimate their combined costs before deciding whether any saving is justified.
A discount should not quietly cancel your policy
A 20% discount on the example $180 quote would reduce it to $144. If $180 is your true floor, the customer quote stays at $180. Explain this before promising a discount, and avoid suggesting a smaller scope unless it genuinely removes costs.
The full job pricing calculator applies a minimum after adjustments and explains when it controls the recommendation.
Review the floor when the service call changes
Recheck travel time, load-out, wages, insurance allocation and payment costs when they change. Use completed-job records to see whether the small-job assumptions remain realistic. The business pricing worksheet process helps keep those assumptions consistent across quotes.
